Tamerlane was to Central
Asia what Alexander the Great was to the Greek Empire.
Ruling in the 14th century from his fabled city
of Samarkand, he built an empire that extended from India to modern
day Turkey.
Although ruthless in battle, Tamerlane was a great
patron of the arts and endowed
Central Asia with some of its greatest architectural treasures.
His reign is generally held up as Central Asia’s
golden age. |
